How to determine the number of movers you need

Moving is a short word that sounds so simple, when it, in fact, brings a lot of trouble and hardships. It is a period in your life that will be riddled with obstacles, tasks, and duties which will seem to be neverending. In order to survive this endeavor, you will most likely need professional help, as the one moving companies can offer. But, there is one question you will ask yourself as soon as you embark on this process – how many movers will you need? To determine the number of movers you need, you don’t have to be a pro. All you have to do is read the Master Moving Guide’s manual on the factors that will affect this decision. Spoiler alert: there are a couple of them.

Determine the number of movers you need by taking into account the size of your home

We are pretty sure you guessed that one of the biggest factors when determining how many movers you need is the size of your home. Your movers will not have the same work in front of them when moving a studio apartment and when moving a five-bedroom home. While not every studio and not every mansion is the same, statistical data says the following.

  • For a studio apartment and 2 or 3 bedroom apartment, you will need 2 movers on average.
  • For a 2 or 3 bedroom house, you will need to hire at least 3 movers.
  • And, for a house that has 4 and more bedrooms, you will need to hire 4 movers.

Of course, the size of your house alone doesn’t have a say into how many movers you need. A lot depends on the type of your move as well, and whether you need last minute movers or you have plenty of time until you moving date.

The number of movers you need depends on how many items you have to move

One of the best ways to determine how many movers you need is by taking into account the size of your home. But, not all homes have the same amount of furniture. Some people prefer a minimalistic look and buy only the necessities. Others like to live a lavish lifestyle and fill up their homes with a lot of items. Going by this logic, a one-bedroom apartment can sometimes have more items than a four-bedroom house. It’s rare, but it happens.

That’s why the weight and the number of things you have to move largely affect how many movers you need. It’s only logical that the more items you have, the more movers you will need. Since more movers usually equal more money, having a thorough spring cleaning is one of the best short distance moving tips you can find. Don’t carry any unnecessary things, but bring only the essentials.

How many special items do you have to move?

Believe it or not, it only takes one item to turn your entire relocation into an expensive endeavor. Such items are usually heavy and bulky and moving them without special equipment and a lot of movers is impossible. The items in question include pianos, hot tubs, pool tables, and items of high value, such as fine art and antiques. So, if you have one or more of these items you have to move, consider you will have to hire more movers than you originally planned.

The number of movers you need will depend on your budget

Moving is expensive. Therefore, you should see how many movers you can afford to hire. When you are preparing your moving budget, take the following aspects into consideration. First, the distance will affect your moving costs. Long-distance relocation is more expensive than local moving. The reason is simple. You will have to pay for travel fees, fuel if you plan to travel by car, plane tickets, hotels, food, and so on. In addition to this, the size of your move is also important. It is not the same to relocate a small apartment or a four-bedroom house. Then, you should consider the number of moving services you want to use. For this reason, you should talk to your movers. Explain what you want and how much money you have. Then, you can decide together about the number of movers you need for your relocation. Sometimes, less is more.

Local moving service costs

When you are moving locally, distance is not the most important factor. Movers take three factors to determine the moving costs for a local move.

  • The state and the city of your new residency
  • Movers charge hourly
  • If you are using any special moving services

On average, movers charge $25 per mover. Let’s do the Math together. Usually, you will need two movers for a studio apartment. Movers will need 3 to 5 hours to finish the job. This adds up to an amount between $150 and $250. The two-bedroom apartment is more expensive. Two movers will need 5 to 7 hours which means you will pay between $375 and $525. Now onto the house prices. Four movers will need 7 to 10 hours to move a three-bedroom home. This will cost you between $700 and $1000. Average moving costs for a long-distance relocation

As mentioned, it is expensive to move nationwide. You will certainly experience a lot of moving stress when organizing an interstate move. The moving costs are higher than the local ones. For one long-distance move, you will have to pay around $4000. Here the distance is the most important factor when calculating the moving costs. Other factors include the weight of your shipment and special moving services. Now, onto the numbers. The following prices are all without extra moving services. For one studio apartment where items weigh around 1900 pounds, you will pay around $1500. One-room apartment with items weighing between 2500 and 3500 pounds, expect to pay between $1800 and $2500. Lastly, for the three-bedroom house where items weigh 6000 pounds, you can pay between $3500 and $4000. Discuss with your movers about the price, additional moving services, and the number of movers you will need for your relocation.

Think about getting a different kind of help

It’s true that the easiest and safest way to move is by hiring moving professionals. They have the knowledge and experience needed for relocating you down the street or across the state borders. However, in case you don’t have a hefty moving budget, your options are limited. Of course, you can attempt to hire cheap movers and possibly stumble across a moving fraud. Or you can just attempt to have a DIY move with some help from good friends. So, how do you pull off a DIY move?

Well, you start by doing the necessary research. You will need to rent a moving truck, find packing materials, and learn some tips and tricks about the easiest way to pack. But, most importantly, you will need to find help for loading and unloading your items. That’s when your friends and family enter the scene.

How to ask your friends for help?

You have to be very considerate when asking your friends for help. You may not need to determine the number of movers you need, but you do have to perform a delicate task – ask for help. In a way, your friendship will be put to the test, but the outcome depends on both you and your friends’ answers. When asking, don’t just assume they will put everything on hold for you. Instead, try to come up with a solution that works for everyone’s schedules. Also, express your belief in them and their willingness to help you, but don’t get mad if, for some reason, they say no. Who knows what other duties they will have on your moving day.

If you manage to get your friends on board, you will not need to determine the number of movers you need.

Hopefully, this guide helped you determine the number of movers you need and decide whether there is a better alternative for you. At the end of the day, if you are satisfied with the services you received, don’t forget to reward your movers or your friends with some tips or food and drinks. It’s always nice to show your appreciation for people who helped you.
