One of the best guidelines for first-time movers is to set a budget and stick to it for the best moving experience.

When moving for the first time, set the budget and stick to it

We know that finances are the number one thing that makes the relocation stressful. However, when you set the budget and operate within it, everything else becomes much easier. There are plenty of ways in which you can save money on relocation. Also, if you are moving long-distance you really need to learn how hiring safe movers saves you money. Make sure that you know exactly how much you can overspend on different aspects of your relocation. It is easy to spend more than you have when moving for the first time, so try to avoid this as much as possible.

Declutter your home

The more items you want to relocate, the more your relocation will cost you. Any of the long-distance movers will tell you that the final bill is calculated mostly on the weight of your items. So, decluttering is the best thing you can do before you relocate. Go through all of your belongings and ask yourself whether you really need all of them. Throw away all the duplicates, all the items that you are no longer using or wearing, the broken items. Here is what you can do with them:

  • Organize a yard sale – Or simply sell them online. What matters is that you do what is most convenient for you and to earn some money along the way.
  • Donate them – All across the country you can find plenty of charities that you can choose from. Goodwill is just one of them, for example.
  • Throw away – If your items just cannot be fixed, throw them away. It is the easiest way to get rid of some items. Just make sure to be eco-friendly while doing this.

Get packing supplies

Packing supplies also make for a big part of your relocation process. In our guidelines for first-time movers, they occupy a large spot. You should try to obtain as many packing supplies for free as possible. For example, instead of packing paper, you can use your old newspaper. Or, turn a regular old blanket into a moving blanket that will protect your items perfectly. Towels and linen can also serve the same purpose, of course. Instead of buying moving boxes for clothes, you can pack them in bags and suitcases first.

Where to get moving boxes for free?

Moving boxes are an indispensable part of the moving process. You will need plenty of moving boxes, especially if you are moving a large home. So, check out the following places for some free moving boxes:

  • Your friends and family – Perhaps some of your close people have moved recently and have spare moving boxes. Ask them and they will be happy to get rid of them.
  • Your office – Chances are high that you have several sturdy moving boxes at your workplace. If this is not the case, feel free to knock on the doors of some local business.
  • Liquor and grocery stores – These stores always have plenty of moving boxes that you can use. Just make sure to take only the ones that are in good condition.
  • Craigslist – This platform has virtually everything you want. Plus is has a free section where someone is constantly giving away moving boxes. And you should definitely check out more places that give away moving boxes.

Hire reputable movers

If you are planning to hire movers, you need to make sure that they are reputable and professionals. Look for the movers that have at least five years of experience. Needless to say, you want your movers to be licensed, and to offer insurance. Movers will offer you a moving quote, but you should choose the right type of moving estimate:

  • Binding moving estimate – Movers will offer you a price based on an estimate of your belongings. If your items weigh less or more than the original price, you will pay for the original price.
  • Non-binding moving estimate – With this type of moving estimate, you are never sure what the final price will be. The movers will offer a price, but that price can still change on a moving day depending on the actual weight of your items. In our guidelines for first-time movers stands that you should avoid the movers who only offer this type of moving estimate.
  • Binding not-to-exceed estimate – This is the type of estimate where you will pay for the original price if the items weigh more than expected. On the other hand, if your items weigh less, you will not have to pay for the estimated price.

Soon, you will be sitting in your new home, chatting with friends at your welcoming party, feeling tired but happy. Try to enjoy the process as much as possible and plan every single thing ahead.
